NICE has begun work to assess tapinarof, a topical treatment for adults with mild to severe plaque psoriasis. The appraisal will consider both how well the treatment works and whether it represents value for money for use within the NHS.
Topical treatments remain an important part of psoriasis care. They may be used alone for some people, or alongside other treatments, and can be particularly relevant where psoriasis affects smaller or difficult-to-manage areas of skin. The start of a NICE appraisal is an early but important step in the process that may eventually determine whether a treatment is routinely available through the NHS.
At this stage, tapinarof has not been recommended by NICE and there is no decision on NHS availability. NICE’s project is listed as in progress, following consultation on the proposed scope of the appraisal. PAPAA will monitor the process and share further information when a consultation or final guidance is published.
Anyone who feels their psoriasis treatment is not working well enough, is difficult to use, or is causing unwanted effects should speak to the healthcare professional responsible for their care. Treatment decisions are individual and should take account of the type and severity of psoriasis, where it affects the body, other health needs and personal preference.
