Living with scalp psoriasis: Tips for managing the itch
If you’ve ever had an itchy scalp, you know how uncomfortable it can be. But for those of us with scalp psoriasis, the itchiness is just the beginning. This autoimmune condition causes skin cells to multiply too quickly, leading to redness, scaling, and intense itching. Over the years, I’ve learned how to manage it, and here are some tips that have helped me.
Shampoos with coal tar, salicylic acid, or ketoconazole are essential in my routine. This helps to reduce flaking and calms the inflammation. I avoid over-washing, as it can dry out my scalp, and shampoo every 2-3 days instead, but I guess you may have a need to wash more often.
Prescription corticosteroid creams and salicylic acid treatments help reduce the redness and loosen the scales. I apply them directly to the affected areas for relief.
To keep my scalp hydrated, I use thick conditioners and natural oils like coconut oil. I’ll also apply petroleum jelly overnight for deep hydration during dry seasons.
Stress is a major trigger for me, so I incorporate yoga and meditation into my routine. Managing stress has made a noticeable difference in preventing flare-ups.
I avoid harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures that can irritate my skin. Gentle, sulphate-free shampoos are my go-to, and I wear a hat to protect my scalp from the cold.
